Our long-term community neuro-rehabilitation service for males at 144 Boughton Green Road has been rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). When the service was assessed during a visit in July, the CQC found the care to be ‘Good’ in all of the following areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, Well-led.

144 Boughton Green Road provides long-term neuro-rehabilitation in a stable home environment within a community setting. It is suitable for males who have a diagnosis of acquired brain injury, associated cognitive difficulties and co-morbid conditions. The focus is on long-term rehabilitation and behaviour/risk management to enhance quality of life and develop daily living skills.

Our thanks go to the Registered Manager, Jaymee-Leigh Clancy, and the whole team at 144 Boughton Green Road, who are dedicated to enhancing the lives of the service users in our care.

The inspector from the CQC observed the activities within the home, viewed care plans and other documentation, spoke to service users and staff members. They also heard feedback from families and commissioners.

Individuals’ experience of the long-term neuro-rehab service

The CQC concluded that “People (i.e. service users) and their families were happy with the care and support they were receiving. People told us they felt safe, and relatives said they were kept informed of any accidents or incidents. There were enough staff with the experience and skills to meet people’s needs. When the need arose, people were supported to access other health facilities and professionals and people were supported with their medicines. People were supported to be involved in the decisions about their care and were supported to be as independent as they could be. They had choice and control over how they spent their time. Relatives told us they felt listened to and any concerns raised were addressed.”

Individuals’ independence, choice and control over their care

The service at 144 Boughton Green Road was commended for supporting service users to make choices and scored 3 out of 4 under the section ‘Independence, choice and control’. The CQC wrote in its report: “People were supported to have choice and control over their own care. People told us they were supported to undertake activities they wanted to do. One person told us about going to stables to assist with horses, another told us about going fishing and to the theatre. Each person chose what holiday they wished to go on each year. We saw staff offering choices of meals to people and checking with them whether they wanted to go out. People were able to choose where they spent their day.

“One person talked about the arrangements made with him to meet his mother. Relatives told us they could visit when they liked and their loved-one could be supported to visit them if they wished to. One relative said, ‘Anytime, the staff will bring [loved-one] down to see me, like on Mother’s Day. They have also brought them down for a holiday.’

The team was also praised for promoting independence, with the CQC reporting: “We saw in people’s care records there was an emphasis on supporting and encouraging people to do things for themselves, such as brushing their teeth. The aim of the service is to promote independence as much as possible.”
