Thank You to our Maintenance and Cleaning Teams

Dexter Griffin, our Maintenance Manager, highlights the work of our maintenance and cleaning teams who don’t always get the spotlight they deserve. They are the quiet force behind the comfort, safety, and wellbeing of the people we support in our homes.
He says: “When we think about quality of care, we often think of nurses, support workers, or therapists — and rightly so. But the environment we live in plays just as important a role in our wellbeing as the care we receive. A clean, safe, and well-maintained space is not just about appearances — it’s about dignity, health, and independence.”
Understanding individual needs
“Our maintenance and cleaning teams understand this deeply. They know that when a light is fixed quickly, it reduces anxiety for someone who might struggle with change or unfamiliar situations. They know that spotless kitchens and bathrooms aren’t just about hygiene — they’re about creating a space where people feel at home, not in an institution.
“Every screw tightened, every floor polished, every safety check completed is an act of care. And in homes where people live with learning disabilities or a brain injury, this care must be thoughtful and personalised. Our teams have learned to adapt — using non-intrusive cleaning routines, working around therapy schedules, and being mindful of how noise, smell, or unexpected movement can affect the people we support.
“We also place a strong focus on safety and prevention. Regular checks of fire alarms, and emergency systems and water safety measures ensure that our environments are not just welcoming but genuinely secure. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s vital.”
Part of the Richardson Care family
“And then there’s the human side — the small interactions that make such a difference. A friendly greeting in the hallway, a reassuring word when something needs fixing — these moments help build trust and connection. For many service users, familiar faces bring comfort and stability, and our maintenance and cleaning staff are part of that extended family.
“Our efforts are ongoing. We continue to improve our training in infection control, environmental safety, and accessibility design. We invest in better materials and equipment to reduce disruption, and we listen to service users’ feedback — because this is their home, and they should have a say in how it feels.
“So let’s take a moment to celebrate this incredible team. Their work might happen behind the scenes, but its impact is front and centre — in the smiles of the guys who feel safe and comfortable, in the peace of mind of families, and in the pride we all share in providing truly person-centred environments.
“To our maintenance and cleaning teams: thank you for the care you show every day, for the standards you uphold, and for helping turn buildings into homes. Thank you.”
