New Glasgow Coma Scale Publication

We are pleased to support the publication of the Glasgow Coma Scale: an international standard for education and practice with adults. The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)1 has been updated and published in the British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing.
The publication explains the background of the GCS, which was first published in The Lancet in 1974 by Graham Teasdale and Bryan Bennet, who worked at The Institute of Neurological Sciences, University of Glasgow. The original paper introduced a standardised method for assessing the level of consciousness in people with acute brain injury, whether from a traumatic or non-traumatic aetiology.
The GCS assess a person’s level of consciousness in three components:
- Eye opening ( E )
- Verbal response ( V )
- Motor response ( M )
The 2025 publication describes the GCS tool in detail and provides an education framework for its use. It is distributed internationally to neuroscience nurses and is available here: https://www.richardsoncares.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/BJNN_Vol-21-March-2025_GCS-Supp-3_REPRINT_36pp-Web-Lic.pdf
